Web Directory Submissions

Posted on 26. Jul, 2009 by admin in Web Directories

If you operate a website, whether just for fun or for business purposes, you probably want to get as many people as you can to visit. For e-commerce sites in particular, traffic determines the difference between success and failure. One thing worth trying out is submitting to some of the various web directories out there on the Internet. Web directories, also called link directories, maintain lists of websites, generally separated by category. Web users come to these sites in the search for information within a given category. The categories can be extremely specific; for example, an individual viewing the Yahoo! Directory could choose “Business and Economy,” and then click on the subcategories “B2B,” “Communications and Networking,” “Internet and World Wide Web,” “Network Management,” and finally “Traffic Management” before they come across the list of sites that they’d really like to see.

Website owners have the choice to submit their websites to various directories based on the nature of the site, and what sort of directory they’d like to attract hits from. The directories accept submissions based on varying criteria. You can save money by getting a BOTW promo code. Some have free, open submission, meaning that there’s no fee for review or listing. Free directories like these, including the Open Directory Project, may be human-moderated, and thus have certain policies and restrictions when it comes to website content which are not easily abused. Website operators must thus be aware of what they need to do in order to make their sites appropriate for web directory submission in order to get the most out of this process.

Other directories may offer paid submission plans for either a one-time or recurring fee; reciprocal link policies wherein the webmaster has to place a link to the directory on his or her site in order to be listed; or a bid-for-position scheme, wherein the highest bidder gets the highest position within the directory. Some sites, including Yahoo! Directory, which is thought to be the largest general web directory, offer a combination of free and paid “premium” listings. Web directories can be specialized by category, such as those that deal specifically with e-commerce or shopping sites, or by geographical area, so even local, small businesses have a good reason to think about web directory submissions.

Submission to web directories, in particular reputable ones, is considered an important strategy for webmasters. Even though it can be time consuming, it’s commonly thought to be a worthwhile practice, as the gains in traffic can be considerable.
